House of Drecoll (French, founded in Vienna, circa 1880 - 1931)
The house of Drecoll was founded by Baron Christopher DRECOLL (Johann Wilhelm Rudolf Christoph von DRECOLL) born 21 November 1851 in Hambourg and died 17 November 1939 in Lobetal. DRECOLL did an apprenticeship at the fashion house Röper & Messerschmidt in Hamburg. He then went to Vienna, where he first worked for Josef HALLAUER and opened his own fashion workshop in the 1880s. He is best known for stage costumes, especially the one for the actress in 1895 Adele SANDROCK in the role of Marie STUART at the Burgtheater theater play, but also for riding costumes, among others, he also worked for Empress Elisabeth, and othr ladies at the Emperial court.
In 1895, he sold his fashion house to an international company owned mainly by Albert BERG, Sylvain KAHN and the WAGNER couple. These partners decided in 1903 to open the Paris fashion house Drecoll at 4 place de l'Opéra. The house is growing fast, employing several hundred people and having a large foreign clientele. The WAGNER's couple's son Pierre will later take over the management of the house in Paris. Maison Drecoll became a public limited company in 1925 and went public under the name of Drecoll-Beer, after having merged with Maison Beer in 1928; artistic direction is then ensured by Miss Madeleine. Four years later, Ms. WAGNER's daughter, Marguerite BESANCON de WAGNER, took over the management. After the War, the premises of the house became too small and old; it then moved to 130 avenue des Champs-Élysées for more modern installations. In 1931, Drecoll became Agnès-Drecoll. At the same time, Maggy de WAGNER founded the house Maggy Rouff in the old premises of Drecoll.
For his part, Baron Christopher DRECOLL decided to open in 1907 a new fashion house in Paris at 6 rue de la Paix. This house closed the same year because the partners who had bought the fashion house from the baron sued him. The baron left Paris and moved to Berlin in 1908. He opened a fashion house there around 1912 which remained in business until the early 1930s. He was also present in London around 1904-1910 under the name "Ch . Drecoll Limited ".
