Nikolaï RIABOUCHINSKY (French, born Russian, 1877 - 1951)

Nikolai RIABOUCHINSKY, also known as Nikolaï RIABOUCHINSKI (Russian: Николай Павлович Рябушинский; 1877—1951) is a Russian patron, from the Russian clan of RIABOUCHINSKY merchants and bankers. Editor of the monthly art and literature "Toison d'or", which appeared from 1906 to 1909. In 1907 he organized the painting exhibition of the "Blue Rose". He is the author of several books of poetry written under the pseudonym of "Chinski". He also painted by himself following the advice of Sergei VINOGRADOV. RIABOUCHINSKY was born on May 12 (May 24 in the new calendar) 1877 in Moscow. He is the prodigal son of a family of bankers. He is passionate, original and eccentric and wishes to play a role in the artistic renaissance in Russia. If he lacks the scholarship and stature of DIAGHILEV, he has on the other hand a fortune as well as an ambition which allows him to compete for influence with the intelligentsia. The publication of a luxurious art magazine such as the "Golden Fleece" could only bring him the prestige to which he aspired. These links with Paris brought to his review a much larger exchange of ideas than before. He travels a lot and lives in Moscow, visiting New York in 1916 before settling in Saint Petersburg (1917-1922) then in France. He died in April 1951 in Nice, France. He had created in this city an antique shop called "The Blue Rose".
