The russian revolution made Paul’s mother emigrate from Russia to Constantinople then to New York City were is older brother had been established. Odessa being on the other side of the Black Sea from Istanbul, a large number of Russians, not only from Odéssa, but also from other Russian cities emigrated to Turkey. At the end of the 1920s, Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK drove many foreign immigrants from Turkey. The SELENGER family arrived in the United States in 1927. Upon arrival, the young Paul and his sister began to work in the jewelry store of their uncle. After obtaining American citizenship in 1942, during the World War II, Paul got into the Marine Corps of the US Army, and in 1945, continued to serve in North Africa and Japan. And only in 1948, Sergeant SELENGER returned to civilian life. However, still interested in jewelry production, he got a job in one of the oldest American factories ‘H.Pomeranz & Co. NY’. This company produced jewelry buckles, buttons, cuff links. Having the skills of jewelry production and to appreciate the profitability, Paul opens his own jewelry production. The Selenger compagny opens into “Selro Corporation” name. Means SEL (the first three letters of his last name) and RO (the first two letters of the name of his mother, Rosa). His sister was a loyal assistant.
The company was renowned for its brightly colored molded plastic creations representing Asian or African figurines (Woman's head, Devil's head, Mask). There are basically three different figural faces that are found in Selro/Selini jewellery: An Asian woman face (Often called ‘Thai Girl’), an old Asian man face and an African face. Made in numerous colours and textures, often over painted and embellished with elaborate headdresses that are part of the metal settings. SELENGER had a copyright of this faces that are so unique to his jewellery. The production was mainly sets (necklace, brooch, earring, bracelet) in gold or silver metal and the lucite figurine all enhanced with small cabochons, pearls, rhinestones. All the decorations by Selro, were so distinctive, high quality production, incredibly innovative jewelry design that make Selro jewelry cant be confused with any other brand on that time. Selro compagny was invited to production jewelry for companies Florenza, Capri and HARGO. Designer and manufacturer Leo GELLER manufactured some of Selro’s stock between 1960 and 1975 including a line for Hattie Carnegie design by SELENGER.
In the early 60s Selenger opens another line of jewelry with more refined design Selini. These ornaments were marked Selro / Selini. One in New York and the other in Providence, Rhode Island. According to his family members, there was another line of jewelry marked Selan, which worked quite a short period of time.
