Gabriel BIESSY (French, Saint-Pierre-du-Mont 1854 - 1935 Bourg-la-Reine)
Marie-Gabriel BIESSY, born in Saint-Pierre-du-Mont (Landes) on March 25, 1854 and died in 1935 in Bourg-la-Reine, is a French painter.
Born in 1854, Gabriel BIESSY, after a stint in Bordeaux, started at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon as a student of Félix CLEMENT before entering the studio of Carolus DURAN and Luc-Olivier MERSON in Paris in 1879. He sent his first portraits to the Salon in 1882 then undertook a series of trips to Holland, Portugal, Senegal and Egypt. He mainly painted portraits, views of Paris or genre scenes, representing the life of his time.
Gabriel BIESSY regularly participated in the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts where he obtained an honorable mention in 1883. In 1895 he was elected as a member of the National Society of Fine Arts and received an honorable mention at the Universal Exhibition of 1889, had a bronze medal from that of 1900 and obtains a silver medal at the Crystal Palace in London. On January 22, 1902 he was knighted in the Legion of Honor. Gabriel BIESSY ends his career as director of Fine Arts in Cairo and retires to Bourg-la-Reine.
Gabriel BIESSY married Marthe GAMBIER (1876-1968) around 1893. Marthe was the model for several paintings. They had three children.
