Charles Auguste HUMBERT (Swiss, Le Locle 1891 - 1958 La Chaux-de-Fonds)
Charles Auguste HUMBERT, born in Le Locle on March 4, 1891 and died in La Chaux-de-Fonds on March 30, 1958, is a painter, illustrator and Swiss bibliophile.
Charles HUMBERT spent the first years of his education in his hometown. His father, Auguste Charles HUMBERT-DROZ, known as Walter, an engraver, took over the operation of the Le Casino café-restaurant in Le Locle in 1900. In 1912, following the family's move to La Chaux-de-Fonds, Auguste Charles operated the Café des Forains, subsequently named the Auguste Humbert brewery. Charles's father died in 1915. Charles's mother, Anne-Marie WALTER, a housewife, took over the restaurant after her husband's death. Charles HUMBERT has a brother: Gaston. He became a chef and worked in St. Moritz and Zermatt, among other places. The two brothers are very close as evidenced by the correspondence exchanged. Charles sometimes decorates Gaston's menus during private meals with friends.
Returning to La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1914 after a visit to Italy and Paris, Charles HUMBERT settled there permanently. Thanks to his membership in the Reunited Art Workshops group, he gradually acquired a clientele. Well introduced into the world of industrialists who at the time exercised an important patronage, he met in this circle many artists, performers and men of letters.
In 1920, Charles HUMBERT married Madeleine WOOG, daughter of Alsatian Jews and also an artist. His wife accompanies him in all his artistic experiences and they share the same passions. The years of common life are synonymous with great artistic creativity in the painter. Sick since 1926, his wife died in 1929.
His death marks a milestone in Charles HUMBERT's life. He therefore devoted himself completely to his work; he painted a lot and from time to time produced sets and costumes for plays by Jean-Paul ZIMMERMANN. Charles HUMBERT exhibits regularly, he is a recognized and respected artist in the region but his notoriety will not exceed this one. Sick, Charles HUMBERT died on March 30, 1958.
