Bausch & Lomb (American, founded 1853)
Bausch & Lomb is an American company, world leader in medical and optical ophthalmology.
The company was founded in 1853 by Henry LOMB and John Jacob BAUSCH, German opticians who emigrated to the United States.
Supplier of the US Navy of binoculars and telescopes, the company designs, at the request of Lieutenant John MacCready, the Ray-Ban sunglasses. Lomb and Baush eventually developed RB3 glass, which filters UV and infrared rays. Originally called Antiglare, this glass was later patented under the name Ray-Ban (ban rays).
It was also a famous manufacturer of photographic lenses and microscopes. This last branch was absorbed at the end of the 20th century by Leica Microsystems.
The company sold the Ray-Ban brand to Luxottica in 1999.
