Max Factor (American, founded 1909)
Max Factor is a line of cosmetics owned by the American company Coty, Inc. It was created in 1909 by Maksymilian FAKTOROWICZ, a Polish esthetician, who helped develop the modern cosmetics industry, and coined the term "make-up". The brand's current location is the city of Los Angeles (USA), where its headquarters are located.
Maksymilian FAKTOROWICZ was born in Zduńska Wola, near Łódź, then in Russian territory. At the age of 14 he went to Moscow where he worked as an assistant make-up artist at the Bolshoi Theater. He opens his own store of powders, creams and perfumes. He emigrated to the United States in 1904, first to Saint-Louis, then to Los Angeles in 1909. He opened a cosmetics salon on Hollywood Boulevard.
In 1914 he offered the first make-up specially designed for the cinema. In 1928 he developed the first cosmetics specifically designed for black and white films. He received a cinema Oscar for this innovation. In the 1930s, he released the first foundation available to the general public.
