Henri BEECKE (French, Strasbourg 1877 - 1954)
Henri BEECKE (or Heinrich BEECKE), born in Strasbourg in 1877 and died in 1954, is an Alsatian painter, graphic designer and portrait painter, particularly renowned for his colour palette and the use of lighting.
BEECKE was born in Strasbourg on April 4, 1877. He grew up and studied in Thionville, in Moselle. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, in Munich and in Berlin. He completed his training in Paris and Metz.
He presented his work in 1905 in Paris and Berlin, and in 1906 in Strasbourg. He subsequently exhibited in Cologne, Metz, Rome, Wiesbaden, Stuttgart and especially Pittsburgh.
Henri BEECKE painted landscapes, still lifes and above all mainly female portraits. He creates posters with Paul BRAUNAGEL.
He experienced an evolution in his work: after a Fauve period marked by ardor and optical research in color and form, which ended around 1910, Beecke's work was appreciated in a differentiated way; while some believe that the artist seeks resemblance in the portraits he creates, others appreciate the austerity that emanates from his work.
A retrospective of his work took place at the Alsatian art house in 1952, on the occasion of his 75th birthday.
He died in Strasbourg on January 9, 1954. Most of his works are held today by the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Strasbourg.
