Grand Magasins du Louvre (French, 1855-1974)
Les Grands Magasins du Louvre was a large department store.
The Galeries du Louvre was founded in 1855, and built during the opening of the rue de Rivoli. The company "Faré, Chauchard, Hériot et Compagnie" created the fashion store, "Les Galeries du Louvre", with premises leased to La Compagnie Immobilière de Paris. By 1865, the Grands Magasins du Louvre was making 15 million sales, for 41 million ten years later. They employed 2,400 people. Chauchard and Heriot become extremely rich and, in 1877, opened the Grands Magasins du Louvre. It had fifty-two departments and counters offering silks of all colors, Indian shawls, tartans, Parisian articles, all the necessities for hosiery, toys, watercolor, etc.
