Marcelle CHAUMONT (French, Eymoutiers 1891 - 1990 Paris)

Marcelle CHAUMONT, born December 22, 1891 in Eymoutiers and died in Paris on December 14, 1990, is a French fashion designer. Coming from a very modest background, she moved to Paris after the First World War to work in the world of haute couture. Her artistic talent was quickly recognized, and she became the first seamstress at Jeanne Lanvin fashion house, then principal collaborator of Madeleine VIONNET, for whom she imagined the famous drapes that have since inspired many great couturiers. When the Vionnet house closed, she created her own fashion house in 1939 and moved to avenue George V. She hires the young Pierre CARDIN for her "tailor" workshop. Around the 1950s, she created the Juliette Verneuil brand made up of early ready-to-wear pieces from the following decade. Health problems in 1953 forced her to suspend her activities and she retired. Marcelle CHAUMONT, married to Robert CHAPSAL, the son of the politician Fernand CHAPSAL, was the mother of the writer Madeleine CHAPSAL.
