Marimekko (Finnish, founded 1951)

Marimekko is a Finnish brand of clothes created by Armi RATIA in 1951. The name "Marimekko" stands for "Marie's dress" and started with a catwalk in Helsinki with the designs of Riitta Immonen. Marimekko designers tended to create clothes and patterns in order to free finnish women from their clothes. One of the most popular item developped by Vuokko ESKOLIN-NURMESNIEMIA was her unisex shirt called "Jokapoika" ("all men") during the 1950's. Thanks to Jacqueline KENNEDY, the brand became popular in the 1960's among the international market. Katsuji WAKISAKA and Fujiwo ISHIMOTO, designed printed motifs during the 1970's for parents and children. The first deals with foreign companies (japanese and american) were signed in 1970. Kirsti PAAKKANEN became the head of Marimekko in 1991. New designers were assigned to the brand, such as Jaana PARKKILA, Jukka RINTALA, Mika PIIRAINEN and Erja HIRVI. 2000's designs were created by Samu-Jussi KOSKI, Maija LOUEKARI, Aino-Maija METSOLA and Jenni TUOMINEN. Marimekko products diversified to clothes to crockery and porcelain.
