Lario 1898 (Italian, 1898-2018)
The Italian company Lario was founded by Gerolamo SAIBENE in 1898 in Cirimido, Italy. The company belonged to the oldest shoe manufacturers in Italy and was known for producing unique and highquality shoes, using only the best materials and leather. Most of the processes were done manually.
The history of Calzaturificio Lario begins in 1898 thanks to Gerolamo SAIBENE who, just over fifteen years old, decided to free himself from his humble origins, starting in a small workshop attached to his home to make simple shoes for men and children with low-cost materials, intended for farmers in the area. During its heyday in the early 2000s the company had a staff of over 100 employees and the factory mainly manufactured fine women's footwear, which it distributed mainly on the European market. The company has always had a strong vocation for quality and for this reason it has been selected by some of the most prestigious brands in the world to make their footwear, such as Giorgio Armani, Jil Sander, Alessandro Dell'Acqua, Etro, Trussardi.
In 2009, the SAIBENE family sold Lario 1898 to the Sutor holding, which already owned the brands Mantellassi (men's footwear in Florence) and Lorenzo Banfi (women's, based in Parabiago) and had 170 employees and 15 direct stores at that moment. The holding company's forecasts were to reach a turnover of 30 million by the end of 2009. But a year later the holding resold the entire portfolio of its brands to the Korean retail giant E-Land that was buying Italian heritage brands at the moment.
In 2013, following the closure of the Cirimido railway hub and the Korean owner's attempt to outsource shoe production to third countries, mass layoffs followed at the factory and only 20 employees remained at the Lario 1898 head office. In July 2018, by agreement between the Municipality and the owners of the former shoe factory, the territory of the factory in Cirimido was given over for redevelopment. The company's more than 100-year history has come to an end. Currently, shoes under the brand The Emporio Lariano are produced in the workshop of the former Lario 1898 factory.
