Myrurgia (Spanish, Barcelona 1916-2000)
Myrurgia (Spanish, Barcelona 1916-2000)
One of Spain’s most prestigious historic perfumery and soap houses. Founded in 1916 in Barcelona, Spain, by Esteve Monegal y Prat. It was established as a family-run business blending artistic sensibilities with industrial production, becoming a premier Spanish fragrance brand known for iconic scents like Maja, Maderas de Oriente, and 1916 Eau de Cologne.
Esteve Monegal i Prat, a sculptor and intellectual, founded the company to create, what he considered, wearable art. He was influenced by Noucentisme and Art Deco, focusing on both high-quality fragrances and artistic, luxurious packaging. The Name: The name "Myrurgia" is a combination of the Greek words for "essence" and "industry". The company quickly became a benchmark for Spanish perfumery, launching famous, long-lasting products such as Maderas de Oriente (1929) and Maja (1916), which was inspired by flamenco dancer Tórtola Valencia (1882-1955).
The original headquarters, a notable example of Catalan rationalism, was designed by Antonio Puig Gairalt in 1930. In July, 2000, Myrurgia became part of the Puig Beauty & Fashion Group. A few years later in 2007, Myrurgia disappeared.
