H&S Pogue Company (American, 1863-1961)
The H.&S. Pogue Company, also known as Pogue's, was a Cincinnati, Ohio–based department store chain founded by two brothers, Henry and Samuel POGUE in 1863. Henry POGUE, who emigrated from Cavan, Ireland, to Cincinnati in 1851, worked as a clerk in a dry goods store. In 1863, he became head of Pogue & Jones dry goods store on West Fifth Street. Henry and his brother Samuel went on to buy out their uncle John CRAWFORD's company, and renamed it H. & S. Pogue Dry Goods Company. Three other brothers joined their enterprise. Their business became one of the most prominent department store chains in the region, until it was sold in 1961 to Associated Dry Goods.
