Carlo FRATACCI (Italian, 1828–1909)
Carlo FRATACCI was a Neapolitan photographer and a member of various photographic societies in Europe. He was active during the second half of the 19th century.
Carlo FRATACCI began his professional career before 1860 at 4 Vico Nunzio, in the Fotografia del Progresso studio. He later worked at 31 Salita Santa Anna di Palazzo Chiaja, and then, from 1872, at 43 Via Roma. He also worked at Palazzo Nunziante, Piazza dei Martiri, in Naples. Fratacci specialized in portraiture and architectural photography, producing albumen prints of interiors, neoclassical buildings, and commissioned portraits. He also taught photography, both in his studio and through correspondence courses. He exhibited in international competitions, receiving a gold medal at the International Exhibition in London in 1862, and then an honorable mention for his portraits at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1878.
Carlo Fratacci's studio contributed to the development of professional photography in Naples during the second half of the 19th century, producing carte-de-visite photographs and documenting architectural heritage, notably the ruins of Pompeii. Some of his works survive in institutional and private collections.
