These cards are mourning visit cards, not condolence cards. In the 19th century, especially in the second half, Victorian society greatly codified all aspects of daily life, and among them mourning. The rules of etiquette around mourning also apply to the visiting card, which indicates by the width of the black frame the degree of mourning.
The mourning visit card of the Countess of MALHERBE is folded at the bottom left. This tradition indicates that she went personally to the funeral and that she left flowers.
