Description
Page n ° 161 taken from the French newspaper (and the first satirical illustrated daily in the world) Le Charivari of the year 1860. This page show a fashion caricature entitled "Problème géométrique proposé à Longchamps...., laquelle de la ligne droite ou de la circonférence du cercle triomhera ?" (Geometric problem proposed to Longchamps ...., which of the straight line or the circumference of the circle will triomhera?)The cartoonist laughs at the new fashions for these very bulky dresses. The drawing shows two women, one dressed in a crinoline dress (Modern style for the period) and the other with a skinny silhouette (Reminiscent of Empire period fashion). It is interesting to notice that the situation had already arisen with the 18th century dresses and Empire dresses. Then, with the Empire fashion and Napoleon 3 trends and later, fashion will again oppose crinoline's with Paul Poiret's fashions.
