Description
Venetian glass medium long Murano millefiori art glass beaded necklace, graduated by size, with small red beads on the top half.
Murano glass beads were produced as early as the beginning of the 13th century and were used to make jewellery and rosaries. These beads were very popular with the Amerindians during the conquest of the Americas.
Murano glass is renowned throughout the world. The industry developed in the Republic of Venice from the 13th century onwards. The glassmakers settled on the neighbouring island of Murano after 1291, to prevent any risk of fire. The commercial exchanges of the Serenissima attracted the Byzantine glassmakers there after the fall of Constantinople. The Murano glassmakers were not allowed to leave the territory of the republic, to avoid any risk of reproduction of their methods elsewhere in Europe. Although the technique of Murano's glass art was eventually spread throughout Europe, the island's workshops are still active, some since the Middle Ages, such as Barovier & Toso.
