Description
Fire screen in gothic revival style made of hand and machine made woolwork. It is rectangular with a semi-circular top, inlaid in a wooden panel. This is framed by salomonic columns and topped with scrolls. The pattern represents an altarpiece of various colours on a black background. Two narrow panels form gothic spikes, framing a wide pointed arch panel. It depicts a chapel next to an oak tree, framed by floral and geometric motifs. The altarpiece seems to be supported by a floral scroll, the background is black.

The Victorian era saw the blossoming of the Gothic revival, which took over all artistic themes, from literature to architecture. It exalts a romantic nationalism drawing on the epics of Britain's founding heroes. Numerous examples of private Gothic revival architecture were erected in the country. A wide range of furniture in the same style was offered for sale.
