Description
Semi-circular gilt cardboard powder box crowned with a porcelain woman's head. Her eyes are blurred blue and a purple kokoshnik pulls back her blonde hair. The lid is covered with a salmon-pink cloth depicting a sarafan dress. It is embroidered with blue and green linear patterns figuring buttons and collar. A satin ribbon with yellow borders marks the bottom of the garment.

The figurine is of Russian inspiration. Indeed, nearly 150,000 Russian refugees found themselves in France, mainly in Paris, from 1921 onwards, fleeing Bolshevism and the civil war. They took with them a lot of small objects and clothes, and ended up producing them locally. Numerous art galleries in the 9th and 10th arrondissements of Paris sold and exhibited these Russian objects in the 1920s, and were the source of a craze for these decorative arts.
