Description
African tribal-inspired medium short necklace that came out of the Black is Beautiful movement. The centerpiece is a light wood sphere enclosed by two, three-tear gold-colored beads. Four oak-colored wooden spheroids alternate with flat, bright orange circular beads on either side of the heart. The rest of the chain is in a pattern of gold flower spacer beads, small dark orange wood spherical beads, and beige wood rounded cube beads. The beads are threaded onto a clear plastic string with a brass hook and eye clasp.
The Black is Beautiful movement is based on a fight for an equal perception of the black body to help undo all the negative ideas of a society based on white supremacy. The Black is beautiful movement began in the United States in the wake of the civil rights movement and spread throughout the rest of the western world and from a single cosmetic line to all other beauty and fashion industries. The movement emerged in 1960 when half a dozen black cosmetic lines debuted, giving freedom to black women from eurocentric beauty standards. Before the 1960s, the only beauty products advertised to black women were hair straighteners and skin bleaching creams- products that diminished the natural beauty of the black woman and manifested culturally into internalized racism.
