Rostov Veliky has been the centre of enameller's art in Russia since the XVIII century and up to now. Finifty in Russia is called artistic enamel.
The pioneer of the technique was the French jeweller Jean Tuten. In 1632 he was the first to reveal the secret of enamel colours and thus expanded the scope of artistic enamel use.
Since 1770s, in Rostov there appeared workshops that united craftsmen according to their specialities. Among others, the shop of icon painters was organised, which included masters of finifte.
