Description
Charcoal on paper representing a portrait of the Russian ballerina Anna PAVLOVA. The stylised drawing is composed of gestural lines and shading. It depicts the subject from the chest up, in side profile, smiling, with curly hair in a bun under a headscarf. Three gestural lines form the subject's arm which extends beyond the left side of the frame. The signature is written above the top line, and the title and date placed between the two lines forming the subject's armpit.

The painting bears a label on the back indicating that it was offered for sale in 1995 at the Salon des Peintres du Spectacle – Fondation Bassompierre, for the sum of 20,000 francs. The Fondation Bassompierre (Charles Bassompierre (1911–1984)) was an institutional body of the late 20th century that annually held a Salon des Peintres du Spectacle known as A.S.P.E.C.T.S. It provided visual artists from, or connected to, the world of performing arts with an opportunity to exhibit and sell their paintings and sculptures.
