Description
Portrait of a Noble lady, Claire Poieson, Marquise de Plancy in her home attire. The sitter is dressed in an aubergine silk moire long-sleeve dress and blue and a truffle brown silk shawl, with a white baptiste cotton canezou around her neck. Her wigless head is covered with high cotton and lace "dormeuse" bonnet with a silk satin striped bow of a burgundy colour. This type of bonnet is often called "a la Charlotte Corday". The sitter is reading a book, possibly by Abbee Cereau and called "Esprit de Nicole" published in Paris in 1785. Marquis de  Plancy is an exiled Royalist after the French Revolution in a "demi - deuil" mourning dress.
