Description
Snuff box composed of tortoiseshell with a repetitive guilloche patten in black and gold. The lid features a black physiotrace portrait, encased in glass and framed in 9K gold. The portrait is a side profile of a woman wearing a ribboned bonnet and collar. A circular cardboard box covered in gilt paper typical of the 1830s is attached to the object. It contains a wax seal from the coat of arms collection sold by the J. Bing house. This one represents an uprooted oak tree in sinople on a gold background corresponding to the coat of arms of the Domet de Vorges or de Mont family.Jean-Baptiste François Domet was the first lord of Vorges. In 1741, he was appointed to the Parliament of Besançon, a leading judicial institution in the province. Ennobled by decree in 1751, he belatedly brought his family into the French nobility. On May 1, 1781, he married Jeanne-Marie Charlotte d'Orival, lady of Vorges whose portrait in phisionotrace could adorn the snuffbox.
