The original oil on canvas portrait of seven year old boy was painted for the subject's father by Thomas LAWRENCE (English, 13 April 1769 – 7 January 1830) in 1825. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1825, and later attracted much praise when it was exhibited in Paris in 1827. After that, Samuel COUSINS (English, 9 May 1801 – 7 May 1887) did a black and white print based on it.
