Description
A portrait of a young woman dressed in Madame de Pompadour style, an original copy by Lucien LÉVY-DHURMER's painting "Portrait of a Lady with a Chest". The woman in the portrait wears a gold silk dress with a deep square neckline trimmed with a double white lace ruffle. The shortened sleeves, flared at the elbow, are also decorated with lace. The waist is cinched with a tight corset, and the full crinoline skirt is a voluminous one. The girl's fair hair is combed up and gathered into a small bun at the nape, pinned with a brooch with a brown satin flower and esprit feathers. Around her neck is a bow of the same brown satin, adorned with a rhinestone brooch. The woman in the portrait is seated on a carved chair, the back of which is reflected in a mirror, and holds a dark wood box in her arms. The oval portrait was set in a rectangular frame with a golden passe-partout.Most likely this work was a part of Versailles Revival project. At the end of the 19th century, the Palace of Versailles made a spectacular come back. It became once more a national symbol and a place where political events unfolded. Nostalgia for its past splendour inspired the arts, literature and fashion. This project existed since 1867 till 1937.
