Description
A burgundy red coarse wool jacket trimmed with the "Berber" elements – the black zig-zag passementerie and the decorative tassels; collarless, longsleeved, without a closure, with rectangular patch pockets at the bottom of the foreparts, trimmed with a black silk braid with a cord imitation in the middle and black silk tassels at the ends.

The stark contrast of "Majorelle" red (inspired by the vibrant pigments of the Marrakech souks) against black trim is a hallmark of Yves SAINT LAURENT Moroccan-influenced Rive Gauche pieces from the late 1970s and 1980s. It was a direct result of designer’s lifelong connection to Morocco. He began using the specific zig-zag and linear embroidery patterns. His FW1979/80 collection at the Ritz in Paris received a standing ovation for its dramatic blend of Berber’s art and culture. SAINT LAURENT and his partner, Pierre BERGÉ, were so captivated by these designs that they amassed a collection of over 600 Amazigh artifacts, which are now housed in the Berber Museum at the Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech.
