Description
Oval miniature portrait of a lady, executed in watercolour on ivory and enhanced with fine pencil work. The woman is represented bust-length in a frontal pose, her head turned slightly to the right. Her features are softly modelled, with large brown eyes, a small mouth, and a pale complexion.
Lady wears a large bonnet in a light beige or pale blue tone, framing the upper part of the head. Beneath it, grey hair is arranged in soft curls around the temples. A ribbon from the bonnet passes beneath the chin and is tied at the side, forming a loose bow. Her dress is rendered in pale blue tones, with softly voluminous sleeves and a lightly indicated bodice. Around the neckline is a large standing collar or ruff collar in white fabric, its scalloped edges decorated with small blue and white dotted ornaments. At the centre of the neckline appears a pale pink bow.
