Description
Two watercolor landscape sketches depicting a French rural village. Executed in a limited palette of garnet-red and cornflower-blue tones, the compositions employ varying degrees of pigment saturation to create depth and atmosphere within the trees, hills, and architectural forms. The stylized treatment of the landscape, characterized by simplified contours and expressive brushwork, evokes the influence of Japanese prints and East Asian watercolor traditions. Both views represent a village nestled within a gently rolling, hilly landscape. The buildings are distinguished by their blue roofs, which contrast vividly with the reddish vegetation and terrain. In the distance, low mountain ranges rise along the horizon, suggesting a rural region of central France, possibly Auvergne. A church tower emerges above the clustered rooftops, serving as the principal vertical element within the compositions. The first sketch presents a panoramic view of the village, emphasizing the rhythm of the rooftops spread across the hillside and framed by abundant vegetation. The second sketch depicts a closely related scene from a slightly different vantage point, with the church tower occupying a more prominent position and the foreground landscape receiving greater emphasis. It is possible that both sketches represent the same village observed from different perspectives.
