Watercolour and gouache painting of a woman wearing a masquerade ball gown of "Queen of Diamonds".
The dress design is inspired by the famous dress "Queen of Hearts" of Virginia OLDOINI, Countess of Castiglione, the mistress of Emperor Napoléon III. The Countess was known for her beauty and her flamboyant entrances in elaborate dress at the imperial court. One of her most infamous outfits was a "Queen of Hearts" costume, which she wore to the ball February 17, 1857 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Paris.
