Description
Pair of scissors glasses, called "the incredibles" or "the marvelous", in gilded silver. According to the tradition such model without a handle, which could be hung on the neck by a chain, was reserved for women.

The Incroyables ("incredibles") and their female counterparts, the Merveilleuses ("marvelous women", roughly equivalent to "fabulous divas"), were members of a fashionable aristocratic subculture in Paris during the French Directory (1795–1799). They put in fashion the famous binocle-chisel, held preciously in the hand, seeming ready to cut the nose. They are in gold, silver, tortoiseshell, or brass for the less rich, often very finely chiseled. Some are real jewels and they can be equipped with a mother-of-pearl or tortoiseshell handle, inside which fold the two branches of the binocle.
