Description
Large openwork on the top silver pendant with geometric engraved ornaments on the rounded bottom part. The geometric outline and interior design of this piece is unique to Morocco, and can be found in local textiles as well. These designs have talismanic properties and symbolize magic, protection, and good luck.The traditional jewellery of the Berber tribes of North Africa is almost always made of silver in heavy, clearly-defined shapes. Although individual pieces rarely date back any earlier than the 19th century, the designs are very old, and European observers liked to find traces of Roman or Phoenician influence. Before the first half of the 20th century, workshops were mainly established within Moroccan Jewish communities, which, until their departure in the 1960s, passed on their know-how to Berber and Muslim artisans.
