Description
Cotton commemorative handkerchief of the British Cotton Textile Exhibition of 1931 with a portrait of Queen consort Mary printed in blue and with names of northern mill towns to the border. The production of cotton in Lancashire formed an important part of Lancastrian identity, given the dominance of the industry in that area of the North. However, the decline of the industry during the early twentieth century, particularly during the inter-war period, saw the need to promote the industry to the nation. This inter-war period was one of transformative change for the British cotton industry. The British Cotton Textile Exhibition was held in White City, London, February 16-28, 1931 to promote English cotton. The commemorative handkerchief has been printed in several colors including blue and brown.
