M. GAUTIER (French, end of 19th - beginning 20th century)Description
Ink fashion drawing, representing a full length portrait of an elegant woman in a fashionable, Orientalist inspired, evening gown, consisting of a long coat with large sleeves, a high waistline fluid dress with a rose on the belt, and a turban hat with aigrette. The young lady is standing in front of a table with an accessory box on it.Paul POIRET, in the first decade of the twentieth century, revolutionized the Parisian Belle Époque silhouette by ridding it of corsets and whales, but he also inspired a lifestyle, an attitude.
In 1910, the success of the Ballets Russes in "Scheherazade" completely liberated his taste for orientalist aesthetics. His harem pants or his "lampshade" tunics find no better playground than the sumptuous party he gave in 1911 under the sign of the "Thousand and Second Nights".
