Description
Pair of needlework face fire screens, the turned wood handle is decorated with an ivory ring on the top and is supporting a main part of embroidered silk canvas in an atypical scrolled shape. On the first screen, there is a scene representing a lion in a stylized vegetal frame. The second, has a scene of a lioness with her baby lion. Both fans were previously adorned with an ivory silk fringe border. The screens are lined with the same colour silk on the back.
The lion is one of the most represented felines in art. It appears from the Paleolithic on the wall paintings. Represented on the thrones of monarchs or guarding the temples, the image of the lion is closely linked to royalty and protection during Antiquity. During the Middle Ages, the lion is associated with Christ and it is attributed many magical powers, abundantly represented in churches and illuminations; heraldry gives it pride of place. Since the XXth century, this feline has been more and more represented, through photographs of wild life, such as cinema, animal documentaries or even literature with many lion representatives.
