Description
Day dress with Empire style high waistline, in chimney sweep taffeta with square neckline and balloon sleeves. Back gathered at the waist, the bottom edged with a short pleated trimming all around.

During the first two decades of the 19th century, fashions continued to follow the basic high-waisted empire silhouette, but in other respects, neoclassical influences became progressively diluted. Dresses remained narrow in the front, but fullness at the raised back waist allowed room to walk. Colors other than white came into style, such as saffron, blue, or sepia, like in this case.
