Description
Two pairs of bracelets made of aboriginal Tasmanian maireener shell cuff sewn on pink cotton batiste with a brass push in working clasp.Since colonisation, Tasmanian shell jewellery, mostly necklaces, have been researched and collected by many countries. They were among a number of cultural objects collected by French explorers in the end of 1700s as part of a cultural exchange. In 1880 the International Exhibition of Melbourne, than still the colony of the Great Britain, draws the public's attention to a part of the little known Australian possessions, like that of Tasmania. Phasianotrochus irisodonte, commonly known as the rainbow kelp shell, were brought in Europe in big quantities to further decorate jewellery, and other decorative objects, as an exotic souvenir.
