Description
Gouache on paper painting representing a prima ballerina, Alexandra DANILOVA, playing the Street Dancer in "Le Beau Danube" ballet of the company Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo of Colonel W. de Basil. The woman is wearing a red strap dress with white tutu underskirt, and a red flower ornament in her hair. On the background a typical for this ballet decoration of a horse carriage is painted. The role of the street dancer was particularly associated with DANILOVA, who performed it when MASSINE revived the ballet in its final one-act version in 1933 for the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo. The painting is inspired by the original photograph by Maurice GOLDBERG and could be further used as an illustration in one of the Lorna HILL “Wells” series books about ballet.
