Victor Désiré CASSIEN (French, Grenoble 1808 - 1893)

Victor Désiré CASSIEN, born October 25, 1808 in Grenoble, where he died on June 18, 1893, is a French lithographer, engraver, designer and photographer. He illustrates many works of lithographs including the Album du Vivarais and the Album du Dauphiné (1835-1839) in collaboration with Alexandre DEBELLE, a collection in four volumes of drawings representing the most picturesque sites of the Dauphiné such as the Perrier waterfall near Valbonnais. He founded with Alexandre DEBELLE the Society of Friends of the Arts of Grenoble and traveled a lot throughout its existence. On April 9, 1834, he married Virginie RAVANAT, merchant of novelties and sister of the painter Théodore RAVANAT. With his family, he moved to Marseille in 1840 where he set up a small business that made a living and a photography workshop that enabled him to support his family. He sometimes returned to Grenoble and in 1843 drew the plates for the book "L'ornithologie du Dauphiné" by Hippolyte BOUTEILLE, a work which describes about three hundred species of birds observable in Dauphiné. He is also the author of a few paintings, including a self-portrait in the Musée Dauphinois and charcoals. In November 1857, his daughter Victoire Marie Blanche CASSIEN married photographer Louis DODERO in Marseille.
